I picked this book up at my local library initially intrigued by the cover and title. I'm at the 14th chapter now and I can't put the book down. It's remarkable and eloquently written. I have learned so much from this book and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It is the best book I have ever read (though some parts were hard to get through without dropping tears).

Hi,
My name is Amina and i am from New York. I just finished reading, My Guantanamo Diary, and I must say that it has been one of the best books I have ever read. when i chose this book i had no idea about what it contained inside i picked it up thinking that it would be interesting to read about Guantanamo.
this book really opened my eyes. Being from a Muslim background myself, i imagined the men of my family being in the situation of all those detainees and all the images stuck to me.
I am also hoping to go to a law school once i graduate college. this book has motivated me further. i am just waiting to have some kind of an enlightenment as to what my goal should be as a law student. i want to be able to make a change for people who are being treated with such indignity.
once again i loved your book and i wish you luck in your future with everything you do.
best regards
Amina Amejed

Hey, just home for Xmas and saw that you're book is doing ok. Well, if you need first hand quotes I'm always free (or my grandfather....who lived through it). Anyways, congrats and have a good one. Take it easy.

Dear Mahvish,

I know you probably get thousands of emails a day but if you by chance ever get to read this i hope it brings joy to your soul and a smile to your face.

First off i just want you to know that I am 18 years old, i just graduated in June 2009, and I'm from a very small town in Oregon. My heritage is Greek, and my mother has her whole family in Greece, so before starting college i decided in September to move to Athens and be with my family and learn as much as i can from them along with my heritage, culture and the launguage. I am here in Athens now and prior to my deparcher i went to a small book store in my town to find books to bring with me and read. Of course i went straight to the Memoirs, Biography/Autobiography section because thats what gets my attention the most.
I saw your book and read the back and thought "this looks cool, i'll grab this to." I had no idea what Guantanamo Bay, Cuba was or what it ever was, and to me i thought it was going to be an interesting book.

I have read your book, your diary, your memoirs, and i can't tell you how many emotions i had reading this book. It educated me in so many ways, made me realize things i never realized, and think of so many men and their families that i probably will never meet. A lot of things i read in your book i couldn't even believe were true, i was so embarressed to be an american at times, and then so grateful at other times. I have cried, laughed, angered myself, and much more with your words and stories of what you embraced, and discovered and told to the world. I am soooooooo happy i read your book because in the end i didn't think of it as, just a good book...It was an Amazing, beautiful, educated book. and i think you should be so proud of yourself for doing what you did for those men, and at Guantanamo Bay. You Truly have a gift not just with your words, but with people and understanding and being open minded. I have learned so much from you and these men. I know this might just sound freaky and stuff.hahaha but i truly loved your book, and i hope some day i can do the same with my words.

i was also wondering, after working at Guantanamo Bay, and after your book was published, did your family gain a lot more respect for you and honor, or was it not really a big deal to them what you were doing? Do you feel closer with your mom and dad now that you know more about your heritage? And also have you gone back to Afganistan to see some of the men and there families you helped? What are some of them like now? Im sorry about all the questions I'm just really curious to know what happened after the book and the past few years.

I know my grammer and puncutuation is probably horrible, i never really was good at that,

and also im sorry about all the jabbing im doing, i just dont know how to tell you enough how amazing your book was.

I hope your well and this finds you in good hands

Sincerely,

Anna Karimalis- Kitchin
